5 academicians set up an innovation achievement transformation research center in Foshan

GDAS Foshan Industrial Technology Research Institute introduced international factors for the upgrading of four major industries in Foshan.

In yesterday's "Innovation and Technology Incubation" high-end forum, 4 academicians from Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering and 1 academician from the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine came to Foshan with their achievements to look for ways of industrialization. These 5 academicians also set up an academician’s innovation achievement transformation center on the same day of inauguration of GDAS Foshan Industrial Technology Research Institute ("Foshan Research Institute").

Using Foshan Research Institute as a platform for linkage and the academician’s innovation achievement transformation research center as a carrier, Foshan leveraged the resources of GDAS and took a substantial step in introducing international and domestic innovation achievements for industrialization.

Introducing international scientific and technological achievements to four main industries

In September 2018, the People's Government of Foshan City and GDAS signed an agreement on establishing GDAS Foshan Industrial Technology Research Institute, with the focus on serving the development of Foshan's four main industries, including smart manufacturing, electronic information, new materials and bio-health.

"With 3 national key laboratories, 3 national engineering centers and more than 20 provincial key laboratories and engineering centers, GDAS will provide its support in all aspects, including experimental conditions and talent teams, for Foshan Industrial Technology Research Institute to incubate its achievements", said Liao Bing, Secretary of the Party Committee and President of GDAS.

Xiao Renjun, President of Foshan Research Institute, introduced that, with the support from GDAS affiliated institution, Foshan Research Institute would organize national platforms related to the four major industries to set up sub-centers within the Institute. It would strive to introduce and build more than three national high-end R&D and industrialization platforms (sub-centers) in the next three years, with more than 50 enterprises in the incubator, for a cumulative output value of over 200 million yuan from the incubated and graduated enterprises and platform institutes, and be recognized as a national incubator.

With Foshan Research Institute as the link, the international innovation resources of GDAS had also been successfully introduced to contribute to Foshan's industrial upgrading. Xiao Renjun revealed that, in addition to this high-end forum, GDAS -- the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Institute Directors Forum would also be held in Foshan on August 8. "We hope to magnify the added effects of our technological strength and industrial strength in Foshan, innovatively create a model of transformation of scientific and technological achievements, and promote international scientific and technological cooperation".

In the future, the Research Institute will deploy an innovation chain around the industrial chain to strengthen the introduction and secondary development of international advanced technologies. At the same time, it would improve the capital chain around the innovation chain, set up an incubator fund for transformation of scientific and technological achievements, and attract capital from angel investors, venture capitals, industrial funds, banks and insurance companies.

Sino-Ukrainian High-End Academician Program was industrialized in Foshan

At the forum, Chinese and Ukrainian academicians and experts explained the advanced technologies in their own research fields and expressed their expectations for industrialization of such technologies in Foshan.

Igor Krivtsun, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, introduced that the advanced technology from the Paton Institute of the Academy of Sciences had been applied to space technology, pipeline welding and underwater welding, and also applied to high-frequency welding in living organisms. "Our welding technology has been contributing to China's high-speed railway construction, and the high-frequency welding technology has also been applied to living organisms in more than 30,000 surgery operations in Ukraine."

Igor Krivtsun said, Foshan was an industrialized city, which had a great demand for welding and new materials. The two sides were discussing on a project for cooperation in the field of welding. He believed that both parties could give play to their own strengths to produce greater effects. He suggested that Foshan and Ukraine could set up a two-way laboratory for regular project development and communication and for promotion of project industrialization.

Sergii Akhonin, Academician in Communications from the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, mainly introduced the research and development achievement in new-type titanium melting. This achievement could be used in aircraft manufacturing and chemical equipment manufacturing. Volodymyr Korzhyk, Director of the Paton Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, presented 4 advanced plasma technologies, including the plasma arc hardening technology, which could significantly improve the wear resistance of tracks and reduce wear to the wheels.

Zhou Chenghu, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, presented the Cloud Nest, the first-generation drone nest independently developed by his team. Based on 5G, artificial intelligence and big data, the Cloud Nest incorporated several technologies to enable auto-piloting, self-replacement of battery and unattended operation. It could use in for patrol inspection of power substation, waterway and river. "Foshan has a well-established manufacturing industry. The production of Cloud Nest also requires strong technological support, such as welding technology support. I believe it can be well integrated with Foshan's industries and its mass production can be realized as soon as possible."

The team of Wu Qingping, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, had established a large database of microbial safety and health science in China. He wished to build a Foshan-based international technology innovation center for microbial safety and health in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Pan Fusheng, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, had made many original achievements in new materials and new processes related to magnesium alloy, aluminum alloy plate foil and forging, iron-based tools and materials. He believed that the new energy vehicles would lead to a dramatically increasing demand for magnesium alloy parts in recent years.

With the establishment of the Academician’s Innovation Achievement Transformation Research Center, the industrialization and application of many of the above projects are likely to happen in Foshan and drive the upgrading of the industrial chain, thereby promoting related industries in Foshan to move forward to the mid- and high-end of the value chain.
